One of the reasons that people use to select Apple computers over Microsoft was to avoid the long time malware and spyware issues that have plagued Microsoft for several years. Now that Apple has increased in popularity, it has become the target for malware like Mac Defender & Mac Protector to name a few. However, AppleCare is declining to support such issues...

Net Easy Supports resolution of Apple Malware Issues

The recent scenario of several malware software products have targeted Apple (Mac) systems and have left many consumers as victims of infections. What is worse, reports have now surfaced that Apple has instructed the AppleCare techs to neither decline or admit the existence of such software and to NOT attempt to remove such software according to ZD Net. Apple has taken the position that is cannot support malware issues leaving those consumers using AppleCare contracts high-and-dry for support.

Net Easy on the other hand is a vendor neutral IT consulting company that has long been using Apple (Mac), Linux, Solaris, Unix and Windows systems. Net Easy is well versed in security practices and operations and uses many tools to facilitate: prevention, detection and resolution of such problems. Feel free to contact Net Easy for support with such issues.

Jame Whitby joins Net Easy's systems administration team.

Butch joins Net Easy's Systems Administration Team. Butch comes to Net Easy with Linux Administration experience since 2004. His most recent tenure was senior systems administrator overseeing the electronic medical records systems of Elementary Dr. Watson. This company used the "Open Source" electronic medical records systems named "VistA" to service private practice medical groups from Virginia to Texas.

The VistA system is developed in the programming language of MUMPS. The MUMPS programming language was developed in the 1960s for health care. The system is used in the VA Medical Systems where doctors and nurses have learned to use the software and like it. However, most software developers do not think much of it in today's technology. The software has gotten some poor reviews in the press like the Wall Street Journal's article and it appears most medical groups do not use it even though it is free to operate. One of the underlying issues is that it is easier to turn a medical professional into a software developer than it is to teach medicine to a software engineer. For further information on the software, please visit: http://www.worldvista.org/.

Butch joined Net Easy in April 2011 and will continue developing skills across technical roles. Net Easy does not isolate services to any one vertical market but Net Easy's management has direct medical experience in clinical, didactic and research medicine. Net Easy is a private company that is neutral in vendor hardware and software services that consults on best practices in IT services. Net Easy has consulted with the VistA system and infrastructure design but mostly facilitates data migration to other software products in the medical arena, including but not limited to other "Open Source" medical applications.

Net Easy would like to welcome Butch in his role and wish him much success in his endeavors.

Google's Android runs Python via SL4A

Mobile development has been dominated by Java for many years. However, Google's Android introduces alternatives for script support like Python and more.

Mobile Device Development

Java has dominated the mobile market for the development solution. The JVM, security, scalability, etc. of Java has proven outstanding for applications. However, Java is now owned by Oracle and has never been 100% "Open Source" even when owned by Sun. Additionally, with Oracle's actions in 2010, the Java Community Process has pretty much concluded that open Java development is now dead. While this is more a philosophical point verse the factual scenario (forking Java); there are still many developers seeking 100% open languages.

SL4A by Damon Kohler allows for script development on Android

SL4A (Scripting Layer for Android) brings various scripting languages like Python to the mobile device platform where it can execute scripts directly on the device. The project currently supports Python, Perl, JRuby, Lua, BeanShell, JavaScrript, Tcl and shell with plans to add more. Developed by Damon Kohler, currently employed with Google, it is early in development and hosted on the Google code page: http://code.google.com/p/android-scripting/ While it is not reached highly visible status, many suspect it shall take-off with Python as the script language. Clearly Google will invest in support of such should it detect activity.

Why Python?

Tiobi recently published research which claims that Python has overtaken PHP development and that Python is the fastest growing language in 2010 (http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html). Python already dominates in the scientific communities for development and appears to be gaining in commercial use.

Non-programmers probably ask why they should care. However, some people (including at Net Easy) believe that almost all professional jobs will require some programming skills in the future as data continues to expand. Python developer and chairperson of the Python Software Foundation Steve Holden clearly believes this http://blog.oreillyschool.com/2010/09/new-ost-course-python-2-getting-more-out-of-python-by-steve-holden.html. A review of the skills required for jobs today: programmers, network admins, security specialists, analysts, engineers, mathematicians, statisticians, biologists, etc., etc. demonstrate the pervasiveness of programming skills in the information age.

Python is poised to be the language of use and has now become the dominate entry level computer science course in the United States. One example is at MIT where the entry level on-line course is in computer science and engineering is using Python to teach the material.

http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-00-introduction-to-computer-science-and-programming-fall-2008/

What are the strengths of Python?

Some simple points are that Python is:

100% "Open Source,"

runs on any platform (Linux, Mac and Windows)

can be scripted or compiled

written in procedural fashion or object oriented

is an objected oriented language

is easy to learn and read (see below)

mature libraries for any type of development

rapid application development

Those are a few points that are made everywhere when discussing Python.

A feature of Python that is not required in other languages is the "white space" syntax or the "indentation" requirements for the code to execute. This is unusual in a programming language and was even a point of complaint for new Python developers for many years. However, after several years of use, it became clear that the indentation feature was a huge advantage, particularly compared to scripting languages like Perl or PHP. Such languages as Perl or PHP were also easy to learn and quick to develop. However, they were usually difficult to understand later, rife with poor techniques and problems. Python's indentation requirements forces the developer to space the code in a fashion to run. Such scenario results in an added benefit that makes the code very easy to read and follow later. Thus, maintenance or reuse is fast and easy to achieve. As a result, the "white space" phenomenon of Python results in code that is very easy to maintain over time and actually leads to the infamous "Return On Investment" goal as the total cost of ownership is reduced over time.

Kudos to Damon and Google for the SL4A project! We hope everyone will embrace the adoption of it.

DomainKeys is a relatively new authentication system for sending email that provides receiving mail systems with an additional assurance that it is legitimately sent from where it claims. Having authentication like this allows domain based blacklists and whitelists to function more effectively and can make certain types of phishing schemes easier to detect. Another benefit is that spam filtering can be made much more reliable because DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) can prevent spammers from forging the source address of their messages. This system allows mail servers to sign outgoing messages with an SHA-256 signature and work as follows:

Public/Private key infrastructure without an authentication certificate.

The mail server sending mail from the domain creates public and private key pair DNS server Holds txt record with DKIM public key of the mail server. It also computes the SHA-256 Signature of an e-mails header/body data and signs it with private key.

The mail server that receives mail and supports DKIM txt record lookup (example, exchange 2010, postfix with configuration, exim with configuration) receives an e-mail with a DKIM signature: DNS lookup for DKIM txt record, decrypt SHA-256 with provided public key, if the value doesn't match then the message has been *TAMPERED WITH* or is *FORGED*, this is handled based on mail servers configuration.

The end result is that by upgrading your e-mail accounts to have this feature is like sending a certified letter through the post office. Other servers have a valid way to verify who you are.

DomainKeys was designed by Yahoo and is under patent. Yahoo had released the code to the DK library under a dual license DomainKeys Patent License Agreement v1.2/GPL v2.0 which maintains ownership of all code to Yahoo. This went unmaintained and has now been replaced by a Patent free version called The OpenDKIM Project with licensing under the New BSD License.

Net Easy delivers discount for Endian UTM

Net Easy delivers discount for Endian UTM for non-profits organizations and educational institutions.

Net Easy is pleased to announce that Net Easy has been able to negotiate a discount for educational institutions and non-profit organizations for a new product to the US market. This software incorporates a custom management platform that allows for simplified configuration, deployment and management of the various Open Source software products that Net Easy uses for network management.

Net Easy has been using Open Source (FREE) Linux/Unix based solutions for years to do its routing, fire-walling, web filtering, intrusion detection, spam filtering, anti-virus filtering, VPN, high-availability, BGP, etc., etc., etc. services. This presents a huge cost savings to our clients compared to products like Cisco, SonicWall, Watchguard, Barracuda, Microsoft, etc.

Net Easy often achieves even further savings by installing the software on standard computers specified for the goals instead of the manufacturers fabricated equipment. During the last few years hardware has improved to allow virtualization of these layers as well. Thus, Net Easy has been able to virtualize the various servers (file server, Windows Domain Controllers, etc.) into one physical layer (computer) which reduces the hardware, maintenance and power consumption costs.

The Endian Unified Threat Management (UTM) product brings further cost savings to our clients in that it reduces Net Easy labor costs required to configure and support various custom built solutions. Endian UTM software incorporates many of the software products Net Easy uses now and provides a faster method to configure and manage the various software products we employ for our clients.

A feature list is located here:
http://www.endian.com/en/products/features/overview/

A new cost savings being introduced in 2010 shall result from the internal staffs' ability to do simple network modifications via the user interface. Internal staff can be trained to do certain functions to the network without advanced command line skills. This reduces the labor expenses for many reasons such as outside vendors. For example, the creation of VPN keys along with the local client software product can be taught to users for management of staffs' remote connections.

Many people are looking for a product that is cost effective but can serve to filter their malware, spyware, spam, do web content filtering, etc. from the Internet. This product can achieve this and offers even more benefits for clients operating local e-mail servers (particularly MS Exchange). It can be configured to act as a secondary MX record so that regular maintenance can be performed on the mail server without losing or bouncing e-mail.

It offers network traffic monitoring, web proxy, SIP proxy, easy interface for defining custom firewall rules, etc. In short, it reduces total costs of labor to configure these custom packages which results in savings for clients. To date, it offers the most value for the dollar and actually reduces expenses associated with labor costs.

Net Easy is happy to provide price information for your organization. Feel free to contact us for further information.

Firefox 3.6 brings developers new benefits along with user enhancements

Mozilla released Firefox 3.6 which offers many new features. One of the more important items to Net Easy will be support for HTML5. HTML5 allows for enhanced web applications feature of working on local files prior to upload. The "poster" attribute has been added to video element which means developers can display a single frame image while waiting for the video streaming to initiate.

Another important feature is the support for the Web Open Font Format (WOFF) which allows developers to embed fonts in their Web site
and pass them on to the browser with metadata about licensing
information. The theory is that this could result in licensing of fonts for web browsers.

Mozilla continues to enhance the JavaScript performance and has added support for JSON objects encdoing and decoding speed.

Additional features include altering display abilities to switch between Portrait to Landscape views on tablets like the upcoming iPad using the MozOrientation event. Stylessheet (CSS) options for items like Gradients are included, multiple background images, and pointer events to do page targets of elements.

One can anticipate a lot of changes in browsers as the rush is one for capture developers interests in Chrome extensions vs Mozilla, support for HTML 5 elements and potentially the return of broswer specific features that will not be standards based. It should be a wild ride as the competition increases.

A new feature that users will enjoy include Personas which will allow custom wallpaper setting to make your browser different from others. Enahanced security to help reduce malware. New technology which they claim will reduce phising along with "forget this site" to ensure privacy. Parental controls, password management, outdated plug-in detection to name a few. To see a list of security features, visit this page: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/features/#security.

Net Easy selected as Endian Partner for Linux based UTM (Unified Threat Management)

Net Easy is selected as a partner by Endian to provide Unified Threat Management services using the Endian products.

December, 2009 Endian announces Net Easy is selected as a partner to distribute and install "Unified Threat Management" platform. The system is derived from the "Linux from Scratch" project (http://www.linuxfromscratch.org) and makes heavy use of the Open-Source tools which Net Easy has used for years in network projects like network monitoring, intrusion detection, sip proxy services to name only a few.

Endian is capable of doing spam filtering and antiviris filtering in either bridged mode or gateway mode. However, another benefit is for groups that operate their own Microsoft Exchange E-mail Servers in house. The Endian software/device can be configured to serve as a secondary MX record, allowing the Microsoft Exchange E-mail Server to be rebooted or taken down for service without loss of e-mail.

"Endian is a combination of various Open Source products written in various languages that are connected together using the Python programming language (http://python.org ) to ensure interoperability. This provides for highly cost effective development and keeps the price point at a good value for features" says Bryan Fogleman. IT professionals can achieve best practice services with reduced time to hand configure many of these services. Troy Frew points out that a few examples of the features are:

Routing

Network Security

Web Security

E-mail Security

Management

Logging

Updates

VPN

However, some really nice features that take more time to address would be:

High Availability

WAN Failover

Hotspot

Updates & Backup
